Organize Projects By Element Type in Visual Studio for D365

Share this:

If you are developing code Visual Studio for Microsoft Dynamics 365, you may end up adding a lot of objects to your project. The list of objects can quickly become cluttered. This can make it hard for you to quickly find the object you are looking for. In this article I will show you how you can use Organize Projects By Element Type in Visual Studio for D365. This will keep the objects organized into folders.

Does your solution Explorer currently look like this?

Let’s instead allow Visual Studio to automatically organize the objects into folders like this:

The Microsoft documentation for this can be found in this link:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/fin-ops-core/dev-itpro/dev-tools/projects

Unfortunately there is not a way to organize the objects if they are already added to your project. So first, take a screenshot of all the objects in your project so you remember them. Then remove them from the project.

Next, in Visual Studio, go to the Dynamics 365 menu, then Options.

Select Dynamics 365>Projects tab.

Then check the checkbox labeled ‘Organize projects by element type’.

Finally click ok.

Now, add objects back to your project. And as you do, Visual Studio will automatically create folders by object type name, and store your objects in those folders.

When you first setup a new Visual Studio environment, and you are coding a solution for Dynamics 365, remember to set this setting. This will save you some time if you have to do it later.
